Fotamecus Filmmagick

We're making film magick. In June this year a small group of chaos magicians and witches began a project to create a film that was not a documentary about magick and paganism, nor a sensationalist use of the craft as a way to sell yet another product. We'll leave that sort of thing to Buffy and childrens' book writers.

Our project is not about making another commodity but is instead an attempt to use film as a medium for our magick. Just as we might use candles, cords or herbs, we intend to work magick with film. Practically this means we're making a film. We're using 'proper' film, making it with a 1957 clockwork movie camera and editing it by hand, taking the strips of film, a pair of scissors and some special sellotape and putting together a magickal entity.

What's the purpose of our magick? To invoke and stengthen a 'servitor' that was created some years ago by a group of magicians in America. A servitor is a thought form, created by a magician to embody and carry out the will of the magicians through carrying their statement of intent. The film becomes the spell and is the medium through which the spell is brought forth and given out to the aether.

What is Fotamecus then, the servitor this spell is meant to invoke and strengthen? Fotamecus is a magickal tool for the control of time, an attempt to use magick to create free time by liberating ourselves from the dominance of Chronos. We want to break free of clock time, the daily automation at the heart of much modern society, in order to free up our creative powers. In many ways this intention is strongly connected to a theme at the heart of the craft. We all work to re-establish a real relationship with time, with the seasons of the goddess and the turning of the wheel. Clock time is a line, from birth to death, every passing moment is measured and calculated. For too many people time is money and this is nothing other than a veil across our spirit. Fotamecus is a magickal tool to rend the veil of clock time, the chronological. Chronological means quite simply the logic of Chronos.

An experiment no doubt, although what else would be expected from chaos magick? We don't expect to finish the project before the end of the year although the central rite will be happening late this summer, after Lammas. Even when we finish the film, the project will continue for an indefinite time since the film is intended to not be simply watched, dispassionately, but will instead form a magickal rite all of its own, carried out through the watching of the film. Those who watch the film will contribute to the strength of Fotamecus each and every time they see it and also gain power from the film, a power, hopefully, to rend the veil of Chronos for themelves and those around them.
